What are Medicare Supplements or Medigap?
Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap plans, offer added coverage to bridge the gaps in Original Medicare. These plans help cover out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, providing peace of mind and comprehensive healthcare coverage for those enrolled in Medicare.
Important things to know about Medigap policies
- Medigap policies are there to supplement your Medicare Part A & B plans. You must have Part A & B in order to get a Medigap policy.
- Medigap policies have a monthly premium. You may also have a premium for your Medicare Part B that you will pay to Medicare.
- Each person needs to have their own Medigap policy even if you are married.
- Your Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable, even if you have major health issues. Your policy can never be canceled as long as you pay your premiums ontime.
- You can not get a Medigap policy if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (Also called Part C).
What Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans cover?
Generally Medigap will cover:
- Your deductible for Medicare Part A and your Coinsurance, which is the 20% of the cost that Medicare does not cover
- Your part of the doctor’s bill for services covered under Medicare Part B
- Your coinsurance for Hospice care
- The first three pints of blood, annually
What do Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans NOT cover?
Usually Medigap policies do not cover:
- Long term care to help you with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, or using the restroom
- Vision care, eyeglasses, dental care, or hearing aids
- Private duty nurses
- Prescription drugs or your out of pocket costs for Medicare Part D
